Advancing Digital Adoption amongst Startups and Small Businesses in Canada is the first in a four-part research series to provide insights and advance the conversation on digital entrepreneurship in Canada. This first report will highlight some of the greatest barriers to digital adoption for startups and small businesses and opportunities to address these barriers to encourage greater digital adoption rates. Five focus groups across Canada will compliment an environmental scan, survey, interviews and a correlative analysis as part of the research methodology.

As the national rallying community and voice for Canadian entrepreneurs, Startup Canada undertakes research to create a better understanding of the entrepreneurial landscape, and to inform policy discussions aimed at startup and small business success in Canada.

Advancing Digital Adoption amongst Startups and Small Businesses in Canada is the first in a four-part research series to provide insights and advance the conversation on digital entrepreneurship in Canada. This first report will highlight some of the greatest barriers to digital adoption for startups and small businesses and opportunities to address these barriers to encourage greater digital adoption rates. The report will be released on February 15, 2016.

About the Methodology 

To achieve diverse perspectives, national representation and grassroots engagement in this report, Startup Canada is working with Startup Canada Communities to complete five focus groups across the country. These focus groups will compliment an environmental scan, survey, interviews and a correlative analysis.

Focus Group Questions

Question 1 | Does your business have a presence online? Describe it. (i.e. social media, website with ability to take customer orders, etc.)

Question 2 | What are the most significant barriers you face when attempting to get online and stay online to run your business? (i.e. skills, resources, cost, time etc)

Question 3 | What skills do you and/or your team lack to effectively implement new digital technologies?

Question 4 | Describe the challenges you face when attempting to adopt and implement digital technologies.

Question 5 | Business case: In your view, is online adoption (including online presence and adoption of new technologies) a profitable activity for your company? Why or why not?

Question 6 | What fears and/or resistance do you and/or your team face when it comes to onboarding new digital technologies or expanding your presence online?

Question 7 | Have we missed anything?
