Consultant Lauren Millier of Millier Dickinson Blais outlined preliminary recommendations as her company works with the city to create a new economic development strategy.
Barrie needs to target the growing creative sector, the city’s economc development committee heard last week.
“There’s a greater sense of urgency to brand ourselves to attract the creative worker,” said Barrie’s economic development director Hany Kirolos.
“They bring net worth and start new businesses and enjoy leisure.”
“This represents an opportunity for Barrie, to see what the city can do to foster the creative economy,” she said.
“Why is this important? It represents higher-income opportunities, a better skilled workforce, higher rates of education and greater economic stability and ability to weather economic downturns.”
